I have used Twitter for years now. I mainly use it to get the feeling that I know what is going on in the world. Twitter keeps me updated better than news. And, these days, Twitter is news, what with Elon Musk’s exciting takeover.
But I am what is called a LURKER. I rarely post anything myself, though I occasionally contribute to discussions on threads I consider important. So, I frankly I don’t add anything at all to the site.
That’s why I have no followers and follow a ton of accounts. Today I have 33 followers and follow a whopping 808 others!
For some reason, though, yesterday I suddenly wondered if I could start a new non-lurker account and completely reverse those statistics. What if I limited the number of accounts I followed by attaching it to the followers I gain?
I quickly decided that I should aim for this: for every 10 followers I gain I can follow someone else’s account. That’s a favourable ratio of 10 to 1.
Of course, if successful I would have to change that ratio. Having 50 followers and following 5 people is impressive enough, but having 100,000 followers and following 10,000 is just a mess.
So, my next thought was that each time I go up a level in terms of followers, I should adjust the ratio. To keep it simple it would go like this.
Followers 10 Following 1
Followers 100 Following 10
Followers 1000 Following 20
Followers 10,000 Following 30
Followers 100,000 Following 40
Followers 1,000,000 Following 50
Now, I have no experience of gaining any kind of audience so I have little hope of getting even 1,000 followers, but clearly 1,000,000 is merely theoretical. Still, perhaps I can inspire others to do the same and see who can reach the goal first.
So, how am I going to go about this? I have had no training and have done no research apart from following all those accounts.
I reckon I will just tweet and tweet, looking at what is trending and also responding to what the account I am following is tweeting. Let’s hope they keep tweeting!
Luckily since I am following the owner, Mr Elon Musk, I shouldn’t imagine he is likely to get banned or delete his own account.
